This building is on the corner of Grey Street and Market Street. Diagonally opposite is the Theatre Royal. Up the road is Grey’s Monument; if you keep walking down you’ll come to the Quayside. The Central Arcade is part of the building pictured here.
This is part of Grainger Town, one of the most lovely parts of Newcastle centre. Also see here.
Oh yes. And the bottom part of this section is a NatWest bank.

Aye, I like the twiddly green bits on these buildings too. Good that they made Monument Mall fit in nicely with this part of Town.
Newcastle council has had some spectacular failures over the years allowing hideous buildings to be erected only to be demolished years later but I have to agree with Dave that they certainly had a success with the Monument Mall. I also have to marvel at Dave’s grasp of architectural terminology. I never knew what to call those bits on the top but now I do. I am trying to remember what was there before the Monument Mall. By the way, I nearly forgot, nice picture, Beth.
For Alf, my memory goes back to the 70s. I’m pretty sure that one shop that used to be in the Monument mall location was T & G Allans (a great stationery, book shop). I think they were replaced by JohnMenzies and then by WH Smiths
I have a vague memory that Turners the photography shop had a place nearby as well.
I’m trying to feature some different things Dave. Glad you like :)
Yes Monument Mall is such that I’d never noticed that it’s particularly new, but thinking about it I suppose it must be! Definitely a success :)
I’d never known they were called ‘twiddly green bits’ before either - still at least we both know now eh?!
Thanks PJF!
Thanks a lot, pleased you appreciate my terminology - I like to be educational ;)
Yes I recall a T&G and a Menzies somewhere here too!
I definitely remember Turners though, and have commented on that before, when Beth posted a picture of the Waterstones nearby. It occupied that lovely building, the one with the lion carvings.
Thanks to everybody for reminding me of the Pen Shop, how could I forget it? I was, however, thinking of the big shop on the corner and I think it may have been Burton’s originally.
Alf, it was and I bought my first tailored ladies suit at that shop and many years later it wore out.
this is all way before my time in Newcastle, but I love hearing about how things used to be. Thanks all.
