Princess Anne at Jesmond metro station yesterday. She was in Newcastle to open the new Haymarket metro station. Exciting!

March 28, 2010 - Two picture Sunday - Callers clock, Haymarket

Looking round a thread that Alf linked one day I found this page with pictures of Callers, a store that used to be on Northumberland Street. Only a few days before, I’d stopped to look at the clock outside Haymarket Metro station and noticed that it was put there by ‘Callers the home of good furnishings’.

If you click through to this page and scroll about halfway down you’ll see the clock outside Marks and Spencers on Northumberland Street as it originally was. Thanks to Alf for making me take notice of this little bit of history.

March 27, 2010 - Bewick Court

Bewick Court is, I think, the only residential tower block that’s in the centre of Newcastle. It was cleaned up a year or so back… it’s still not the most picturesque place from the outside, but it’s much better than it was. Still, I quite like this shot.

Anton Hecht, a filmmaker and artist, has made a musical based on the stories of Bewick Court’s inhabitants. See here or here for more info or to watch - and please do. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and happy and sad, all at once. I just wish it featured some of the women who live there. Why just men?
