This is the oldest pub in Newcastle, built in 1691, and there is an original fireplace from that decade in one of the rooms. It was a stopoff for carriages between London and Edinburgh, and it used to have double decker stables for the horses - there was a platform for them to walk up to get to the top level.
It was named for King George, not St George, so the iron sign depicting George and the Dragon is misleading….

Another of my favourite pubs from the 60s but its origins have always been a bit of a mystery. Charles I is said to have drunk there in 1646 and the chair he allegedly sat on is, supposedly, still there. The first King George didn’t arrive on the throne until 1714 so there is a problem with it being called after him. It is all a bit confusing.
I remember it being a very dodgy pub in the mid 70’s, i used to frequent it quite often, and as for the toilets! enough said….
I wonder if Princess Eugenie will frequent there, and sample the Bigg Market ???
She looks more of a Jesmond girl though…

P.S. - Also B, bonus points if you can get a photo of her in Newcastle!!!
Well now I’m confused Alf! I’ll have to have a few drinks in there at some point and see if it all becomes clear :)
Katie H - definitely nuff said! ;)
Mike - I can’t imagine I’ll see a great deal of her wandering round town! I bet I wouldn’t recognise her even if I did though :)
