Was going into Monument Mall the other day when I stopped to see if I’d really seen what I thought I’d seen, and I had. A sign saying ‘Use our loos’ and hilariously with two figures pressing their legs together. It made such a change from the signs you usually see of ‘Toilets are for customers only’ that I had to stop and take a picture.

That sign is really funny! Down here, we have a similar concept spreading. it’s called “nette toilette” (friendly toilet). Since the town is really short of public lavatories, shops and cafes opening theirs to the non-consuming public get funding from the city authorities. Kind of a win-win-win situation for everyone.
It makes a change to hear of good toilet news… over here LOADS of councils are closing their public loos - in Manchester there will only be ONE public toilet. Some councils are closing them all. I don’t know about Newcastle… the fact I’ve never heard anything about closures round here gives me hope!
im an international student studying in Newcastle, and enjoy the daily photo you take in Newcastle:)

what? the loo on the top floor of monument mall is my secret emergency loo!
i’m going to have to find another one now.
What - is it only good to use loos if you’re not really supposed to?!? ;)
Or are you just worried they’re going to get too busy? I don’t think it’s going to be a major problem - they’re still up two floors and also the signs aren’t exactly huge :)
yeah, it’s the fact that they were always empty and clean that did it for me.
The “Use Our Loos” project was started by NE1 (Newcastle Business Improvement District) on 1st March this year.
I think it is actually a very good idea!
The participating locations are listed on the NE1 Website . . .
