If you come out of Central Station, cross Neville Street and stop, you’ll find this model of Newcastle.
It’s not entirely accurate - as you can see, it’s on levels rather than a slope - but it’s pretty good. I just wish Earl Grey was standing on his Monument like he should be.
Of course, I’d also like to know why we appear to be sitting directly over Hell - isn’t that red glow unnerving?

It looks fascinating. Is it permanent or just a passing fancy? I am due a visit to the Toon shortly and would love to see it.
it’s been there a good while now! D reckons ten years - i didn’t think it’d been there that long but neither of us are sure! anyone?
If we’re over Hell I think that means what I’ve always suspected that Newcastle is Heaven!
I do agree though that red glow is just spooky
It has been there a good while and I’ve never stopped to look at it properly. Pretty good isn’t it? I wonder if Earl Grey used to be there, and perhaps he’s been knocked off his plinth?!
I have a booklet called “Public Art in Newcastle”, and it gives a bit of information about this . . .
(1) This piece of art is called “The Grainger Town Sculptural Map”
(2) The artists are, Tod Hanson & Simon Watkinson
(3) It was scupted in 2003 and is situated in Neville Street.
(4) It is made out of Bronze Granite, with LED lighting.
(5) It was commissioned by the (now defunct) ‘Grainger Town Project. They did some great work a few years ago, and their website is still there . . . http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/grainger.nsf/a/property?opendocument
(6) The artwork is describes as being “conceptual representation of the area of Newcastle known as Grainger Town. It is deliberately sited at the western entrance to the area, close to Central Station. The buildings and landmarks are reduced to their essential forms, so local people can work out which is which and visitors will recognise them as they travel through the city”.
Fantastic Peter, thank you so much! That’s really interesting.
I did a bit of searching but couldn’t find anything…did find it on google street view, though! ;D
