These are absolutely fantastic murals! Done in relief too! And the color portions look like they’re mosaics. Whoever said that we’ve lost the art of detailed relief work should see these! Magnificent!
Yes they are fantastic those - shame the building they’re on is so awful.
I will have been nine when they were completed; I remember the bus to town used to stop just beside them!
Cheers, Dave
Dave, I agree about the building, all those blank brick walls and empty boxes on the roof are pretty awful but I always had a soft spot for the store itself. When my grandchildren and I used to “do the town” on a Saturday morning we usually started with breakfast in BHS or should that be Bhs? It wasn’t great but it was cheap and cheerful and set us up for the day’s adventures.
Fair enough Alf, it is a good shop. Do you, like me, remember the buses going down Northumberland Street and stopping right outside there? That would probably have been good for business!
Dave, I lived in Gateshead for most of my life and our buses stopped at Stephenson’s Monument for many years and then in Market Street but I do remember taking my life in my hands crossing Northumberland Street when buses and cars still ran down there. Crossing the road to the Odeon was a particular nightmare.
