We couldn’t get right next to the first beacon, but a very very nice man let on to those of us who hadn’t worked it out that if we went round to the footpath at the back of Segedunum we could get MUCH closer to the flame. This shot is of those who were lucky enough to be inside.
And as promised, more links….

One more pic tomorrow. I can’t resist.

Loved seeing the Roman soldiers in period costume keeping the flame- those Roman soldiers were an interesting collection of people from various countries which we learned from reading a piece you posted yesterday. Very much enjoyed the video of the helicopter flying low at dusk following the line of illumination along the wall path. I didn’t get any audio on either the Youtube or the BBC video for some reason…but we still enjoyed every minute. Good stuff!
Don’t those Roman soldiers look odd with the backdrop of modern houses? But that’s Wallsend for you a strange mixture of ancient and modern.
I will leave with a story from my past. I worked in the oil industry in Wallsend for many years and the head of an American oil company for whom we were building a rig came to visit us. He said that sitting in his office in America he thought the place he was visiting was called World’s End and now that he had seen it he realised he was right, which we all thought was a bit unkind but he was the man who was paying our wages.
Great story Alf and yes, one can’t bite the hand that feeds…!
Glad you like them Ash!
They do Alf, you’re right- I hadn’t thought of it til you said! I suppose I was only focussing on the figures and wasn’t really seeing the houses.
World’s End? It’s not thatbad!!! :) I got some nice pics down the river at dusk which I’ll post at some point too.
