These were the winged people, on top of the viewing tower. For a full sized version of this pic (worth it to get a better look at them), clickety here. Another one of my favourites - you can see them but no detail, but the beacon is there too - is this one.
For photos, vids and people chatting about the event, have a click through to the facebook group Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall - you don’t have to be a facebook member to view. But here are some links to news items, pics and vids of the event (some vids might not be viewable outside the UK - really sorry if this is the case!):
http://www.zimbio.com/watch/iC5HAyEXnuY/Lights+go+along+Hadrian+Wall/AFP+TV+World (excellent vid - must see!)
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/archaeology/news/hadrians-wall-in-giant-light-show-1922195.html (news article and video)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/audio/2010/mar/15/hadrians-wall-beacons (mp3 of a guardian journalist watching the show)
http://www.itv.com/tynetees/hadrians-wall-lit-up69038/ (pretty exciting as it focuses on Wallsend for the first section - and I saw that journalist :) it also shows the festivities in Carlisle, and i really wish i could have been in both places at once)
Another pic tomorrow, and more links to share for those who couldn’t be there (or those like me who can’t get enough!).

We missed Hadrian’s wall in 2008 while driving from Scotland to Manchester. We followed the signs then suddenly no more signs and we ended up in Manchester. A great shame really.
yes that is a shame Bill! maybe if you ever return the signage will have improved .
Watching the video’s and reading all about the day’s events was really, really great. :)
We wished so much to be there in person to experience this once in a lifetime event……so thank you for sharing with us all this super information.
Hadrian’s Wall has always been a fabric in my life, school trips, posing for pictures with various friends & family- the wall was a “must see” whenever anybody came to visit us in Newcastle.
By the way, where is this viewing tower? It is a very interesting structure.
Segedunum I presume! Love it, and lots of good links for me to have a look at this Saturday!
Keep up the good work Beth… Dave
Beth, thanks for all the links, I think the Tyne Tees one was the best though I might be biased. I still haven’t worked out what the angels had to do with it all but they looked good.
Dave, you are right it is Segedunum and the view from the observation platform is spectacular. I can highly recommend the whole site especially the bath house which is amazing. I took my family when it first opened and we spent almost a whole day there.
Glad you liked it all Ash! As Alf said, yes it’s Segedunum :) I’ve never been into it, but will have to rectify that soon.
Thanks Dave!
Alf - the angels had something to do with ‘the almost-lost myth of the winged boy’…. apparently. You can see the leaflet here but it doesn’t say any more than that! According to this story in the Journal though it was the story of a winged boy who could cross the Wall. I couldn’t hear so I can’t really say :(
