So is this lamp post. Love it!
So a debate started yesterday in the comments about Newcastle and Gateshead. I’ve asked the question before (anyone who can find the link will win my undying admiration), but where do you think the line is drawn? What’s OK for Newcastle upon Tyne Daily Photo and what’s not? Gateshead? Northumberland - not all that far from the border with Scotland? (That one I think was pushing it far too far, to be honest, but I love the picture.) People have even said that Durham would be OK. I’m not convinced. But at the end of the day - it’s you lot that come and look at the pictures - so what do you think?

Cmon guys, what is there of interest in Gateshead? Views of Newcastle :)
Only kidding.
I like the coastal pics of Tynemouth and Shields, so please keep posting coastal pics. Also the pictures of the tyne bridge or from the railway bridge etc are good as ‘approach’ photos. I always get a good feeling when I come across the bridge from the south - rendolent of coming home, so I hope you’ll continue to post those. In fact, I even love the view coming north from the Bowes incline at night, when you get streetlight urban areas come up, and you know you’re coming home. Not sure whether that makes a good objective photo, but I love the feeling of ‘nearly home’ that that place always brings up for me.
Also the small towns in Northumberland, Morpeth and Hexham etc are surely good sites for a photo or too and I’d like to see some of them.
I think about 75% should be pictures of Newcastle, maybe have a feature day or weekend for non-newcastle pictures?
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with going outside the boundaries of Newcastle for photographs, I’m sure your regular viewers don’t exclude the surrounding areas (yes, even as far as Durham!) as being without interest…..they all contribute to the broader picture of Newcastle, and that can’t be a bad thing surely? I’ve been doing a daily photoblog since January (with mine the photo has to be taken on the day it’s posted, so another hurdle to jump!) but it means I’ve got LOADS of Newcastle photos that I’ve never used, email me if you want some, they’re free to a good home!
Always happy to see more of my home town, even now Yorkshire is home.
Beth, at the end of the day, it’s you who does the work. It’ll be you who takes the decisions. Wether you look at Newcastle from Gateshead or the other way round - if it adds something to the way you (or we) perceive Newcastle or life in it, just post it. And as far as I remember, living there DOES include going places outside the city boundaries.
I’m not one for posting holiday pics, though. I think photo blogs are about the place, not the blogger. At least that’s what I try to keep in mind myself.
Nice one Rob, wind everyone up ;o) Seriously though - thanks. I always love the Gateshead streets on the right - yes, it’s coming home, even though I’ve only lived here 7 years or so. And the ‘Have Faith In God’ building. It’s just hard to get a good pic through grubby train windows. I’ll have a go next time though!
75% seems like a slightly low ratio to me, if anything! Hmmm - out of 26 pics posted by me (not Cassandra) this month 7 pics are outside of Newcastle (although some are of Newcastle at least in part; just taken from Gateshead) which is about 75% - but I wouldn’t normally have a feature week of Gateshead. I would normally expect it to be more like 85-90% Newcastle. I’ve just checked back a couple of months and that seems about consistent. I do like the idea of going a little further afield at weekends - might do that actually! Thanks for that idea. I’ll have a day out in Northumberland at some point!
Mo - I love Durham and Northumberland too, I don’t want people to think I think they aren’t interesting! I want a trip to Blanchland again sometime soon, I haven’t been there in years.
I couldn’t do this posting the pic the day it’s taken. It’s hard enough like this! I try not to leave too long from taking to posting, but sometimes there just is. I am in awe that you’ve kept it up so long! And I do want a guest week one week. I’ll do it soon - please send some of the pics!
Daniel - thank you, I really appreciate that - but I do this because people look at the pics, so if people have strong opinions I’ll fall in line :o)
I could argue that on some blogs, the blogger is the important thing. But on City Daily Photo blogs the city is the star. I’d like it if people click through to my blogs and read them regularly - but people who are here for pictures of Newcastle might have no interest in my writing, or even in reading about Newcastle. So yes, I’m trying to say I agree!
I’m from Gateshead but I often went into Newcastle. To me, both are part and parcel of each other. What is Newcastle without Gateshead, and what is Gateshead without Newcastle. They are one. So photo’s of Gateshead are welcomed by me. And the same for Durham, Hexham (I was born there) and the rest of Northumberland. :D
Nice one Beth, agree with all you’re saying.
HEATHER - YOU ARE SPOT ON with your ‘they are one’ view - exactly how I feel.
Is the ‘Have Faith in God’ building Chowdene Chapel? Every train user knows where you mean!
Any photos you care to publish of the North are Good for me.
Thanks Heather. I’ll try for Hexham sometime too!
Thanks Dave! :) And I don’t know, but next time I go past I’ll try and get a shot!
Thanks NicholasB!
Hi, That’s an interesting question about how far afield is too far. I’m reasonably new to CDP, and I’ve been thinking about that one a lot. I have so much to photograph within the city limits, but so far nobody is doing a CDP within 2 hours’ driving time of here in Oregon, so I’m thinking of posting some fun photos from outside the area. There is a sort of “feel” about what the home turf is, and we tend to consider the cluster of nearby towns and the countryside as home. If someone started doing a Daily Photo of a nearby town, I’d definitely take that into consideration. When there are several people in one town, that’s another story, but if someone lived in Seaside and started blogging, I might leave seaside to them :)
