Hi Hilda - I can’t believe I forgot to link! Have a look here. It’s free to enter during the day if you ever have some free time in Newcastle… or, well, Gateshead :)
Careful Beth, Gateshead is Gateshead and Newcastle is Newcastle.
Yes, I know people refer to Newcastle/Gateshead. But not the locals and never shall the twain become one.
Remember, it was Gateshead that went ahead and started the Quayside Regeneration and it took Newcastle ages to come on board, that is why it is the ‘Gateshead Millenium Bridge’.
Well said, Mrs. K. We might once have been “a dirty little back lane out of Newcastle” but times have changed. I’m a Gateshead lad and proud of it, although I was born in Newcastle and love the city.
Well I’m a Newcastle lad, living South of the river too (Hebburn though.) I agree with all the above; the name ‘NewcastleGateshead’ is for tourists only (clever though it is)!!
Good shot though and I like the juxtaposition of ancient and modern (cathedral and Sage). Juxtaposition eh?! Where did THAT come from at ten-to-ten on a Thursday night?! ;)
OK - two conversations going on here. Thanks Dave, glad you like the shot and the juxtaposition!
Mrs K, Alf. I’ve had a discussion going here before about where I can take pics for Newcastle Daily Photo and people were happy to accept Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside - even Durham! And I am usually careful to make sure I call places by the right names.
I said if you had time free in Newcastle - and then added Gateshead in. I didn’t mean it as an afterthought; just as a point of accuracy. Yes the Sage is in Gateshead, but if you have free time while you’re in Newcastle it’s no hardship to wander over the bridge. Should you only be able to visit if you’re visiting Gateshead? I’ll bet that most tourists visit Newcastle, and see it as the same place. I know locals don’t - I don’t, and I’m an incomer! - but the battle is, I think, lost outside the north east.
I’m just a bit confused by this to be honest. If I hadn’t mentioned Gateshead at all I could understand our point - but this is Newcastle Daily Photo, and we’re just detouring into Gateshead this week - because it would be a shame to ignore the place.
I still have not worked out exactly where the boundaries are for Tyneside and I was born at Dunston (within spitting distance of the Tyne from the backyard) and I don’t even know exactly who is a Geordie either.
But its fun. To outsiders, we can be Geordies, Tynesiders, Northerners and just plain awkward.
It’s just that Newcastle, tends to get a bit ‘uppity’ and we (Gateshead people) have to keep them in their place at times. Can’t have them forgetting their ‘broughtens up’.
As for your photos, they are so good I would not mind them if they came from Timbuctoo - but just once in a while mind. Newcastle Daily Photo suits me fine - and if that means I get to see Gateshead places as well - that’s a bonus.
Mind sometimes Gateshead forgets itself. The’ dirty back lane in and out of Newcastle’ was once called ‘Sodhouse Bank’ until people complained - now its upmarket ‘Sherriffs Highway’. OK so he rode his horse and carriage into the Newcastle Assizes - but the houses all had sod roofs. Sad innit?
I wasn’t going to say anything because technically you’re the leader around here now, but, Mrs K was right in saying that Newcastle is Newcastle and Gateshead is Gateshead. I always try to shy away from “out of town” photographs, and even really think hard before I post Tynemouth pics and the beaches and Priory, even though it’s one of my favourite spots. It’s technically “Tyneside” of the river, but it’s not technically Newcastle anymore.
That being said, there are plenty of daily photo blogs that deviate from their own cities. They will usually be photographs that the poster took while off on holiday or something that has to do with their city in a roundabout way. Remember when Curly ( http://southshieldsdailyphoto.wordpress.com )did a week of Newcastle shots? His reasoning was that Newcastle and Gateshead *are* touted as NewcastleGateshead and that people from both sides of the Tyne visit the other side quite frequently.
When posting a daily blog like this one, it’s important to always post why you’re deviating from the norm, even if it’s a week of out-of-town pic’s, you need to post the reason why they are out-of-town on each and every post. Each new post is the first thing that people will see when they visit our site. Some people may have missed a few days, just come back from a holiday of their own, or maybe they’ve been really busy and only scan for the photograph and don’t even read the text… For whatever reason, if they are wondering why we have posts of Gateshead on a Newcastle Daily Photo site, and they have to dig around for a reason, some people will chalk it up to being disorganized and won’t be in a hurry to return again because they will expect the same disorganization if they should ever return again.
I’m not saying that posting Photographs from other places is not allowed (I actually think these photographs are quite interesting, even coming from the states and being an honorary Geordie for a year, I completely understand the Tyne divide and avoided going to Gateshead unless it was for a purpose) just make sure that whenever you do deviate from the norm that you document it every time and say why. I myself have forgotten to do this in the past, so i’m not going to give a wrist slap or demerits.
I understand, too, that after posting six days a week for just under a year, that you may be getting hard pressed to find things to photograph and feature. I remember this time being very very hard and I took some comments, and even lack of comments very very hard, even to the point of wanting to quit posting! At first, I found posting very hard to do, as I was always busy with uni and was very limited in funds to go places out of the way (even taking the bus to the city centre in the winter was a privilege!) but then I just took it as an excuse to get out more, explore those little alleys that I had been avoiding before then. Get our readers involved if you can, ask questions, get suggestions for places to photograph, maybe it’s time for another week of photographs from readers? That was always a fun thing to do! Use one of these ideas, or come up with something else, it’s your blog now. Keep it fun, or comments like the above, which I don’t think meant any harm in their posting, can become weary to carry around.
Let me know if you want any more ideas… I actually have one that involves asking the readers to take photographs of a certain topic, much like theme day “yellow” or “shadows” and seeing what they come up with. Reader/blogger involvement is key!
By the way I was just having fun when I brought up the ‘NewcastleGateshead’ name. I can see exactly why they’ve coined that name; I wouldn’t wish to offend anyone from Gateshead, but I think it was created in an effort to raise the profile of the place, which it undoubtedly has.
I was born in Newcastle in 1965, lived there until 1989, and since then lived in South Tyneside. I didn’t know that Newcastle folk got ‘uppity’ about Gateshead! - I suppose that sort of thing might be inevitable though, but I can’t say I’ve noticed it much.
I would like to see pictures of Newcastle and Gateshead on here - basically, I like this site the way it is. You featured the Angel recently and I don’t see that being out of place here. I can’t believe for a moment that people from Gateshead would not appreciate the shots of Newcastle, and vice versa.
I don’t think there was any problem with this shot you chose, and it does shows both N &G.
‘To outsiders, we can be Geordies, Tynesiders, Northerners and just plain awkward.’
I’ll drink to that Mrs K!
Thanks for all that. I wasn’t sure whether I’d really upset you and hoped not. And thanks so much for being so kind about my pics!
I think, looking back, that it was actually a bit of a compliment… I tend to think of myself as an outsider and you were talking to me like I’m a local :o)
I do think it’s a real shame when names like ‘Sodhouse Bank’ are lost. If you lose touch with your history, you risk starting to make the same mistakes over again. Names like that are part of the whole. There is a road in York called Bad Bargain Lane (hilariously I went on a course entitled ‘Reduce Stress by Managing Your Money’ on that road!) - I’m sure that it will put some people off living there, but it’s a far more interesting (and memorable!) name than, say ‘High Street’ or ‘Park Road’ innit?
Cassandra…. I thought Curly’s reasoning was that his tagline is ‘A collection of images from South Shields and the North of England’???? Anyway. I would actually disagree that most people would be put off by a pic of Gateshead on Newcastle Daily Photo. I would argue that only local people would even notice. Anyone else want to weigh in on that theory? I have nothing to back me up other than gut instinct so could well be wrong!
I rarely go to Gateshead, but I don’t actually avoid it! Whenever I go I wish I made the effort to explore more often :o) Part of my hubby’s family lives on the really high ground up there and one day I’m going to take time while we’re over there to get some shots of Newcastle from really high up.
I love posting here and there is still so, so much that I haven’t documented. And Newcastle changes so much that when I’ve finished - I’ll just go back to the beginning :) It’s tiring at times, but largely only when I have other stuff going on so am tired anyway. Having said that it was nice to have you to take over the week I was working on my assignment. And I love the scheduled posts so I can even post when I’m away for a few days - did anyone notice I was gone at the end of May?! Yes though, I do find it hard when people don’t comment on shots that I love. It makes me want to explain why they should love them too - but I try not to tell people what they should think :) And it’s always nice when people rave about a pic that I didn’t think was THAT good!
Thanks for asking people about their favourite places btw - I am going to get some of those. And I have actually been meaning to ask for people to send in pics for a feature ‘readers’ pics’ week - since January - it takes me a while to get around to these things!
Dave you’re totally right about the NewcastleGateshead thing - I can understand why it annoys those who have lived here forever and have legitimate reasons to see the places as different, but at the end of the day it’s brought a lot of tourism and business this way, and that has benefited the area no end. And thanks for the reassurance about picture locations :)
I don’t think of you as an ‘outsider’ and I tend to forget that and talk to you as ‘one of us’.
Just keep posting the photos - I enjoy them all and love the comments.
And here is another bit of useless information for other visitors ‘half of Gateshead is classed as countryside and the council cares for over 20 nature reserves and country parks.’
But for sheer scale of what a small city can contain in architecture, nightlife, shopping, football ground, diversity and exuberance Newcastle takes the biscuit, jam and cream.
Thanks mrs K :)
I had no idea it was as much as half of gateshead that was classed as countryside - but I’m not really surprised. An old boyfriend of mine once commented that when he left, travelling south, it was barely any time before he was travelling through the most beautiful countryside. He was amazed to discover that the ‘industrial north’ thing was such a small part of the bigger picture.
I suspect people like keeping it a secret. If everyone knew how great it was up here, everyone would want to live here :)
Yes I’ve probably said this enough, but in response to your comment to Cassandra, I definitely feel Gateshead should be on here too. On another day, Rob mentioned so many other things…coastal shots, approaching the city by rail etc… all of which are ‘Newcastle’ to me.
Fascinating architecture! What is it?

Don’t be so hard on yourself Beth.
