After going on the Heritage Open Days I posted a picture of the Newcastle Breweries offices, mentioning that the architect was the same person who designed the Central Arcade, the Centurian pub and - the Beehive pub. Here’s a photo of the Beehive. You can see the tiles and how ornate the building is.

Never knew it was the same architect - you live and learn.
However, we did meet there regularly, before proceeding to either, the Old Assembly Rooms, Oxford Ballroom or Silver City Dancehall, a visit to the Empire (I remember Johnny Rae), just a pub crawl down the Bigg Market or to one of the various cinema or in the sixties - nightclubs of which there where many.
When I look back we had loads of options - there does not seem to me to be so many options nowawaydays or is it because we look back and think we had it better. Makes one think.
Now I am not so mobile, what I love about this blog - is it brings back so many happy memories, sometimes sad ones are muddled in - but that’s the great tapestry of life.

Great looking pub on the outside - but the punters who frequent the place make the inside much less desirable!
I must say that this is the most ornate building I have ever seen in my 74 years of life on thisplanet.
Hey Abraham, the cathedrals of Siena, Pisa or Florence might be strong contenders for second place ;-) Sorry, couldn’t resist. I’ve been to a trip around Tuscany a couple of weeks ago. Great region. But the Bee Hive is, of course, a very beautiful building.
I love old pub buildings, give me one any day compared to those awful glitzy chrome/neon jobs with absolutely no charm.
Mike.
Mrs K, makes it especially worthwhile taking and posting these photos to hear the memories you have of these places. Thanks so much for sharing them with us. Where were the Oxford Ballroom and Silver City Dancehall?
There still seem to be lots of -places- round to go to - but they are all the same, to me at least. I can’t stand a lot of the music in the pop charts these days, but there don’t seem to be many places that play the kind of stuff that I like. Like Mike says, a lot are awful neony places!
Rob Harris, I have only ventured inside once but I will concur from that experience!
abraham Lincoln, it is very ornate isn’t it?
And hi Daniel and Mike!
This looks like an awesome pub! My boyfriend drinks Newcastle here in Canada.
