This strange display is on the back wall of the Grainger Market next to Scorpio shoes. I have no idea why it’s there or what it’s about. Anyone know?
Sorry for disappearing for a while there. Back now. Hopefully will be able to keep posting regularly again now.

Isn’t that odd? I know exactly where Scorpio is (love the place) so will take a look next time I’m there!
At first glance I thought they were barber shop implements, but maybe not (as there are also some pliers there!)
This is really odd. It’s hard to say for sure, but some of those items look to me like surgical instruments. Not sure why they would be on display like that though.
Welcome back,,we missed you.
This is a very cool display… a grooming implement display.
I love Grainger Market for all sorts of odds and sods.
It’s called “Objects of Beauty” by Gilly Rogers and is supposedly a display of items used in the beauty industry. Did you know that there is a bye law forbidding you from bringing a horse in to the market?
Welcome back, Beth.
Hi Welcome back, I Think I spy some dental implements, but it looks like a general collection of chrome tools, so I suspect there is a mix of different trades in that display. MikeM
The only description I can find is from the visitsunderland.com website so it might be a bit suspect but it says:
Objects of Beauty – Gilly Rogers
(2004) tools and perspex
‘Objects of Beauty’ was unveiled in the
unusual setting between a ladies toilet
and a hairdressers in Grainger Market.
Small tools used in everyday beauty
routines, including tweezers, eyelash
curlers and scissors are set into perspex
blocks and backlit.
Just want to welcome you back and tell you how much I enjoy your photos and comments. I’m new to Newcastle as a post-grad student from the US and started viewing this site before arriving. It has truly helped me “gain my bearings” and enhanced my experience of discovering the city. Thank you for continuing to make this site such a treat!
