I noticed this a couple of months back, that you can see where it used to say ‘BOOKSELLER’ behind the H&M letters.
I wish it was still a bookseller.

i thought waterstones would close one of it’s newcastle stores after it merged with dillons but i don’t know why it didn’t keep the larger of the two.
maybe with the relatively small quantity of books sold in physical shops (versus online sales) meant the overheads of a large store were less cost-effective.
still a shame, i could (and did) spend hours browsing in there.
I would guess that the “Bookseller” sign predates Waterstones and relates to the original occupiers, Mawson, Swan and Morgan who were there until 1974 when they were bought out. The shop continued to trade until about 1984.The Swan was indeed our friend Joseph Swan.
CGP, i just don’t understand why they waited so long. I think everyone expected them to close a shop immediately after they merged, but a decade or so later? that really took me by surprise.
thanks for that alf! joseph swan gets everywhere :)
Before waterfronts it was swann Morton I think! An art supplier and bookshop and a school outfitters with wooden shirt drawers floor to ceiling.
