B has given her blessing for me to take over for a bit so we’ll be spending some time comparing Newcastle to Michigan where I live now. B will be back to regular posting on Monday 9 August!
Gardening in Newcastle for me meant getting an allotment (which I didn’t). This was the closest one to me, in Heaton/Armstrong Park:
Gardening in Michigan is easier, just till up a bit of your backyard and BOOM, instant veg. Keeping up with the weeds is the hardest bit!
It’s a bit overgrown with weeds at a mo but there’s carrots, beans, peas, corn, lettuce, green peppers, all sorts of tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, cantaloupe, two varieties of watermelon, pumpkin, and a bit of broccoli in there. It’s hard to keep up with, but we haven’t bought veg at the store all summer!

Do you bottle, can or freeze for the winter?
No, I don’t do canning, but I do freeze loads of sweetcorn and peas. My family usually keeps up with eating what is ready, so there’s not much to can. Maybe I’ll expand in a few years… Or maybe I’ll be back in the UK and get an allotment! Or maybe I’ll have sold a book or three and can move to the UK permanently have a nice house in the country with a backgarden :P Ahhh… dreams!
