Another Civic Centre shot today, this time as close-up as I could get to the Tower at the top. You can see the ring of seahorse heads, but if you look closely you can see the smaller inner ring above. I love this pic of the tower against a beautiful summer sky.

It has to be one of the most unusual towers I have ever seen.
Excellent photo!
Here are the ’seahorse heads’ just before they were installed in the tower!

Very good photo Beth, I’d not realised there were two lots of seahorses!
Lovely shot against a lovely sky; takes green twiddly bits to a new level. I really love this tower. Take a look here too: http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/core.nsf/a/lmcoatofarms
Love that pic of the seahorse heads Peter!
Love it or hate it but you can’t ignore it. I hated it when it was built but I have grown accustomed to its face. I wonder if the carillon still plays. I seem to remember the bells ringing out on Saturday afternoons.
Well I love it! Great pic of a great tower. Green twiddly bits to a new level. Love the pic of the seahorse heads linked to by Pater too.
The carillon does indeed still play on saturdays Alf; I heard it recently. If you put ‘civic centre carillon’ into Google, you’ll see it featured on the top of the list.
Also, if you Google ‘fortiter defendit triumphans’, you’ll see lots of good info on the coat of arms upon which the tower is based.
photo ed this a few times n never realised there were two rings of sea horses well done beth
