Central Arcade is a hidden gem right in the centre of Newcastle, next to Grey’s Monument. JG Windows is one of the main shops there. I was asked to post a pic of it by someone in the facebook group ages back. If there’s anything you want to see, feel free to post a request, either here or on the facebook group. I can’t promise to get to it quickly (there are some things I’ve been asked to post months ago that I haven’t got to yet) but I will get there in the end. And thank you all so much for welcoming me back. It’s good to know you’ve missed me!
The Hoppings starts a week on Friday! Who’s going?

I spent many happy hours in Windows as a teenager back in the days of vinyl and listening booths. I bought my very first album there - followed by many more over the next few years.
Of all the shops that sold “records” back in the 70s (Callers, Oz, Virgin) I think Windows might be the only one left.
Another great memory jogger, Beth.
Oh - and the Arcade itself is a wonderful building
‘Listening Booths’.!
Weren’t they a great invention. I remember crowding into them on a saturday to listen to LPs on the day they were released.
Just been into WIndows today, and bought my first mandolin. Been a customer of windows for over 35 years, since the early 70s. What a great shop.
Beautiful arcade.
Lovely photo of the Central Arcade, a great place (now) as well as having had a long, interesting history of changes!
We will be at the Hoppings, nearly always go there to get wet!!
Link to a recent post on our ‘Town Moor’ thread about this years Hoppings . . .

Hope it’s ok to post the odd link to the Newcastle Forum on SSC? If no Beth, just say so and I’ll not do so again.
Cheers,
Peter (NH)

These are two of my favourite places in Newcastle, the arcade and Windows. They used to get a better class of busker in there too. I can remember seeing several young classical musicians over the years who were very good.
they still get a ‘better class’ of busker. and the acoustics in the arcade are really good.
I remember as a child, my mother taking down the central arcade. I thought it wonderful then. Got something similar in NZ, but it has none of the unique character of the Central Arcade. Ahhhh… memories… *starts singing off-key*
Upstairs in the part of the arcade opposite Windows, I used to work in the Admiralty offices. It was wonderful going into work and coming out. Why? The pleasure of walking through one of the nicest buildings I have ever seen.
Ta Beth.
Great shot of a great place; certainly one of my favourite spots too. I also love the lettering above the entrances to the Arcade, which have been featured before here too. I share memories of PJF - all those Saturday mornings flicking through the vinyl in Windows! What a shop.
me and another dave!!
