Pearl Assurance House is at the bottom of Northumberland Street. At the bottom left corner of this pic, you can see the Moss Bros building. Pretty different, eh?
In case you can’t tell, Pearl Assurance House is not one of my favourite buildings in Newcastle….
There wasn’t much I could find about this building online (although to be fair I didn’t look very hard - if anyone can point me to some info, online or off, that would be great!) but I did think it was interesting to compare it to Manchester’s Pearl Assurance House. I kind of prefer our version.

that should be pulled down when they regenerate pilgrim street.
I completely forgot that Northumberland St had such a monster… Is this at the Monument end, next to the NatWest cash machine? I guess this building doesn’t leave anyone indifferent, you either love it or hate it. I think there’s something to it that makes it interesting, if only in a different place! The cctv cameras give it menacing look. The Manchester version definitely has lighter feeling to it.
Beth,
We actually had some interesting discussions and posted some photos and newspaper articles, etc, about the current 1970s Pearl Assurance Building, and its predecessor, on the ‘Historic Newcastle’ SSC thread, here . . . .

The above is post 610, we discussed on other posts around that time (on that same thread) also.

Beth, this is one of those rare occasions when I wish you hadn’t looked up. It is horrendous. Perhaps it could be the first of a new series of “Eyesore of the Week”. There would be plenty to choose from, unfortunately. I was going to post a picture of the original Pearl building but I see that Peter has beaten me to it. I love the ad for these “commodious” premises. There’s a word you don’t see very often these days.
Is this one of buildings that’s going to be demolished when they “redevelop” the old Odeon? or is it just me wishful thinking…..
But I like the idea of Eyesore of the week Alf, we could do it as a guest week when Beth fancies a break,
And now as Beth has been encouraging me to look up on my walks to and from work….. I have a confession to make… after living in Newcastle for only 29 years in September I’ve just noticed that amongst all those green twiddly bits on the roof of the Emerson Building at the Monument there’s a clock…. now how could I have missed that!!!!
Yak! Another T.Dan Smith screw-up.
Timmonet has a good photo of Cooks Corner as it was known as here… sigh…

Also check out the Conservative Club building in white, further down the page.
That other 60’s monstrosity that juts out next to the Oden is there now…
