I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Newcastle is a city in which you want to keep looking up. It will reward you.
How have I never noticed the building above Superdrug before?
Edited to add that yesterday, I took my 10,000th pic with this camera. Doing well!

Wow! Thanks a lot.
The bottom half doesn’t match at all with the upper half! For the record, I much prefer the upper portion of this building. The top floor would make a super apartment or work space. This is Northumberland street, right?
I wonder how that one managed to survive. I am pleased it did but doesn’t look odd stuck between those modern additions.
Congrats on 10,000! Woot!
While we’re looking up at buildings - and as Alf seems to know lots of things about the history of Tyneside buildings, please can I ask ……. this morning when I was standing at the lights I had a really good look at the building above Marco Polo’s on Dean Street. It’s painted a bright coral pink colour and white - does anyone know what it was??
It is called Cathedral Buildings and was built about 1900 when a lot of that area was redeveloped. The architects, Oliver, Leeson and Wood designed a lot of the fine buildings that went up at that time. The building’s main claim to fame is that it’s back door, facing the cathedral, is home to the “vampire rabbit” which I am sure has featured here before.
Thats where the vampire rabbit is?! I looked and looked and could never figure it out!!
Mr Stone……vampire rabbit? What in the world is a vampire rabbit..a pub?
Ash, have a look here

What a weird and wonderful gargoyle statue with a mysterious history it seems. Thanks Alf for the link..it is an fascinating landmark on a colorfully painted building. A vampire rabbit atop such a lovely entrance would certainly be hard to miss. We look forward to seeing it in person someday.
Thanks Beth for all these terrific pictures you share with us.
A vampire rabbit ? Who would’a thunk it ?
Glad y’all seem to like it!
Thanks Irma.
Ash, yes it’s Northumberland St. And no the top and bottom don’t match, but very little does on Northumberland St :)
It does look strange Alf, but much much nicer in comparison!
Thanks Cass. I couldn’t believe it.
Sue it’s one of several grade II listed buildings in Newcastle’s centre - there are six grade I listed buildings. See here for more info.
And heh to all the vampire rabbit talk. Always a popular one :)
