  Another classic building and I do like the frontage of the pub, it is much more in keeping with the rest of the building than its predecessor, FM’s, which was a bit too garish. The Eldon Grill used to be an upmarket restaurant and I seem to remember being taken there as a kid for a once in a lifetime treat and it was very posh.

  Alf, thanks for that link the other day to Timonnet; some great pics on there. It suddenly struck me that the Newgate Co-op looks like some other 1930s buildings: the former WD & HO Wills factory on the Coast Road, and even the much missed Royalty Cinema on Gosforth High Street!

  I’d never thought about how similar they look before either. Strange! The hubby thought they were built by the same person, but apparently not.

  And do look at this - pics of the Wills Factory when it was in use and stories about it being shut down. It’s amazing!

  Alf, yes my knowledge of architecture doesn’t go beyond twiddly-ness either! I think you must be right about the Art Deco.
