about Two picture Sunday - All Saints Church ... posted by Beth
Magnificent church - heavenly photo! Why was it deconsecrated?
I look at your pictures daily. My Father is from High Heaton and his grandparents lived in Heaton. I have been searching my family tree, and back in the 1850’s when his family first came to Newcastle from Chatton they settled in the All Saint’s district. Some of the family were married and christened at All Saint’s Church. About 20 years later they were living in the St. Michael’s district of Byker. Thank you for the picture of this Church. I live in Canada and have been to Newcastle a few times, but have not been to see All Saint’s Church, it looks beautiful. Thank you for your pictures.
Leif - to be honest I was hoping someone was going to leap in with an answer to that question. To be honest I’ve no idea. It was converted to offices/auditorium space afterwards, but not for 20+ years, so I doubt that was the reason. Anyone?
Catherine - I’m glad these pictures mean something to you! I love posting things that have connections to people, especially those whose histories here are long ago. It’s important to connect to your roots occasionally. Let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to see!
Nobody seems to know why All Saints was deconsecrated. I can only assume that when people moved out of the city centre in the 60s it was no longer needed. Now that they are flocking back perhaps it will have a new lease of life.
I went to a concert years ago at the church featuring a Finnish accordian player/singer.The church is oval inside with dark wood pews. Its very atmospheric & the accoustics are amazing. I don’t know if it is still used for events.
Strange isn’t it? You’d think somewhere on the internet it would say.
It sounds amazing Hectoria. I hope it is still used - I’m sure someone mentioned on a previous post that it is. I’d love to catch it sometime!
