Cassandra has featured the Arches here before, but my pics have a different angle and a different focus.
In trying to find out who the statue is, I’ve just discovered that the left hand side of this building houses the second largest cavitation tunnel in the UK. Amazing where google and wikipedia will lead you, isn’t it?
Still no idea who the status is though.

Beth, you should have asked Cassandra. Under her pictures in January she wrote
“The tower and building above were erected in 1911 in honour of King Edward VII and his statue still looks out over the campus today”
I love the arches.
Duh. I can’t believe I didn’t read it properly. Thanks Alf!
thanks for your pics cass
I live in the west country now and very rarely get back to newcastle so your site is real special to me.
Enjoy spending abit of time at the weekend flicking through the pic seeing how the city has changed.
Thanks for your efforts
Great shots… great buildings… they have so much more gravitas than a modern, glassy building don’t you think? They look like a uni should look!
Have just had a walk along the banks of the south Tyne, a couple of minutes away from my home. The river smelled just like the sea - and I haven’t noticed that before; it was so refreshing and unexpected.
(Sorry - are the comments meant to be just about the photos?! If so delete this ;)
Get ready B! - It’s nearly that time of the year again… The Tyne/Wear Heritage Days (TWHOD’s) booklets are being printed now ready for 3rd Aug release! http://twitter.com/TWHODs
Thanks Tracy. I’m Beth though, Cassandra posts mainly on Wednesdays :)
Dave - there’s room for both. I love Newcastle Uni, but I love the modern buildings too. I can’t imagine the River Tyne without the Sage these days, can you? And feel free to chat about whatever you want :)
Mike - woo, thanks! I’ve had the days blocked out in my diary all year :) Can’t wait to see some of the things I missed last year!
Cheers Beth… absolutely, I love modern too when done well, like that new Northumbria Uni building! And the Sage - superb…
