I really do like this building. I’ll try not to post any more pics of it for a while, though.
I took the pictures at the same time, both with my mobile phone, so I have no idea why the quality of light is so different. The building looks so much warmer on the first. Any ideas?

You can post as many of these as you wish! They are beautiful. I’m surprised at the quality of the photos taken on your cell phone. Amazing!
Wow these are all great shots, I am so glad I came across your blog, I’ll be returning often to see more of your work.
Cheers

You’ve got one awesome camera phone, Beth!
A lot of camera phones have built-in instant white balance. Your camera seems to have focused on the clouds as the white balance for the first one. The second is white balancing on the reflections in the windows. See how the clouds in the first picture are a nice, soft grey? And then notice how the clouds in the second are a jarring white? The camera can sense this by measuring the brightness of the light and then compensates to make the picture more pleasing to the eye. Don’t ask me how I know that. That’s the simplest explanation I can give. More expensive cameras can adjust the light without distorting the picture like camera phones do.
This is one of my top favorite buildings in the world. You can post pictures of it every day!! What I like most about this building is the doorway in the corner. Perhaps you can get a shot of that?
I’ve always thought that clock is the best one in Newcastle!!
(I hit lucky a couple of weeks ago, caught the reflected view in the side windows of Eldon Square

Someone was asking yesterday about what it used to be before it was Waterstones….I seem to remember it was some sort of gents outfitters/talors, but it was a long time ago!
It would be nice if the window displays were as flamboyant as the architecture of the buillding.
great capture. I like the architectural details and the blue sky.
The main problem with my mobile is that it’s unreliable - sometimes it gets great shots, sometimes not so good, whereas my camera is much more reliable. I am so glad I’ve got my camera back :)
(I’ll let you in on a secret. My husband D got a new phone the same time as me - he bought his for the camera. His is 5 megapixel. Mine is 3.2 and generally takes much better pictures. Is it wrong that makes me want to giggle to myself in a Dastardly and Muttley kind of way???)
I’m also glad people like this building so much! A lot of people seem very blase about it - I suppose it’s familiarity breeding contempt :(
Cassandra, thanks for that explanation. It made me happy that someone could explain it. I even understood most of it!!!!
Hectoria, yes. I’ll tell ‘em that :)
Thanks Julie!
Hi Beth,
These are great shots of a great building.
I’ll have to do a bit of surfing to learn about the history of Emerson Chambers!
Cassandra’s explanation needs no further comment! Your camera has taken it’s reading from the sky in the first shot. You could’ve achieved the result you wanted by half-pressing the shutter when viewing sky, then lowering the camera to view the building; then fully pressing the button to complete the shot… but it’s hard to check the results with the little display on a mobile or digi-compact.
It’s good to talk photography on this shot, because - you might like this - about thirty or so years ago, this building was occupied by a shop called Turners - a camera shop!
I wonder if your readers remember Turners? There was also a branch on Pink Lane.
Best wishes,
Dave x
Post as many s you like. I have always like this building, especially the angle you chose against such a lovely sky.
Great photos either way. Love the decadent details.
Hi Mo, sorry your comment got caught. There again now. LOVE that shot you linked!
Hi Dave and thanks :) Unfortunately my phone takes its camera as soon as the button is pressed so you can’t press half way in to focus. But I have my camera back now, so I’m really happy :) How strange that the building used to be a camera shop!
Thanks Babooshka and thanks Gogouci :)
