More of the Waterstones lions. I quite like ‘em.
The Waterstones building really is impressive.

I’ve always loved the curvy ironwork on the windows, very Art Nouveau….or as Art Nouveau as Newcastle gets anyway!
You should go and have a look in Milburn House on Dean Street if you like Art Nouveau - it’s fantastic.
Can anyone just wander into Milburn House? I passed it last weekend and was fascinated, especially it’s history Admiral Lord Collingwood was born there!
I love this building too I wish I could remember what it was before Waterstones, anyone remember?
Anyway came back with a bagfull of Newcastle pictures at the weekend, I started publishing them yesterday, will probably only do about five days worth for now (my local visitors will start to complain if I do too many) but I spent many years working in Newcastle and it’s great to get up there every now and then to relive some memories.
I’d love to get into Trinity House too, and the Mechanics Institute, the Lit and Phil, Alderman Fenwick’s House, the Holy Jesus Hospital, and many other places. Got any pictures of the interiors?
i think you should be able to just go into Milburn House - it’s home to a few Solicitors and Accountants etc. but it won’t be open on a weekend.
It used to be shipping offices - hadn’t heard about Lord Collingwood being born there though….
I keep forgetting about Milburn House, thanks for reminding me Sue! Maybe they’ll be open to the public when the Heritage days season is on at the end of the year?
Curly…..I might have some interior shots of the Mining Institute at work (student site trip a few months ago) I’ll leave a message on your blog if I find them!
Mo, I don’t think I’ve ever really looked at this building before the day I took these pics. I know it took me years to notice the clock at the top of the building. Shocking, isn’t it?
Sue, someone I was working for went off on secondment to Milburn House and I had to pop down there one day and deliver something to him - I couldn’t believe the building I was walking into. I was amazed that people just WORK there! and that apparently they often have to step over all kinds of bodily fluids when in early on a monday morning. yack.
Curly, go on, give wandering into Milburn House a go and report back to us :) Also, you need to get over here and make a note in your diary. I visited the Lit and Phil, Alderman Fenwick’s House and the Holy Jesus Hospital in 2008 as well as more. For pics go here and here (and for that last link click ‘day before’ for a few days). I only found out on the Friday night last year that this was on but managed get round 13 places Sat and Sun. It was amazing!
Sue I’ll have a go myself!
Mo we should suggest Milburn House on the TWHOD facebook group! Are you a member of it?
Hi Beth, I didn’t realise there was a TWHOD facebook group….good idea to suggest Milburn House tho….now if only I can remember my facebook password…..
Hi Beth,
the pics are great, I haven’t got up to Newcastle on Heritage Open days because there was so much to see and do down here! I covered a load of places on South Tyneside last year as well as Ryhope Engines Museum last year, thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thanks Curly! I think I’ll have to take the Thursday and Friday off this year to get around everything - there is so much to do!
