When I first moved to Newcastle, the main road from the coast into Newcastle was a single carriageway that went all the way down into Jesmond Dene. I used to get the 306 or the 308 bus and it just to crawl all the way down into the Dene and all the way back up into Cradlewell. It used to go past all these shops.
The road, now a dual carriageway, now lies behind those parked cars, on the other side of the wall.
Cafe Bar One on this stretch of road is good, as is Cafe Antipasto - which opens for coffee and breakfast at 8.30am.

Nice and sunny in this photo but the mornings are getting colder if you have noticed. I know Jesmond a little by brother lives there. Nothing better stopping by one of these cafes in the morning for a nice breakfast and a coffee to start your day.
I like these type of photos, thanks :-)
Not quite true, the first part of the A1058 (Coast Road) was built in the 1930’s to give work to the unemployed - I think following the Jarrow March,
The bit you have photographed was jus upgraded and linked to the existing A1058
But I loved the reminder of that old road we used to travel on.
Chris, you’re not kidding - our place has been FREEZING the last couple of nights, and the mornings are decidedly chilly! Thanks, glad you like :o)
Mrs K, I was just talking about the bit that went down into the Dene really.. .I can’t remember where that joined up with the remainder of the dual carriageway. It’s something that was so familiar to me for years, and yet now I can’t visualise what it looked like properly. So frustrating. Glad you liked the reminder, even with the inaccuracies…!
