Yesterday was the equinox, when night and day are of equal length. As my husband and I set off for work, we encountered these birds. With the heavy grey sky and chilly morning air, I felt nervous going underneath them.

I’d like to know what you think about Newcastle Daily Photo. What would you like to see more of? Less of? Do you like themes, for a week or a few days? Do you think the photos should be taken only in Newcastle itself, or are surrounding areas OK? North Tyneside? Northumberland? Gateshead? Where is ‘too far away’?

Dear Beth. I love this site. I live in Australia now but hoping to return to NCL next year. Look on here every morning to get a piece of home. Happy to see photo’s of surrounds like Northumberland and Gateshead etc. I lived in Prudhoe and Cramlington so would love one from either of those places if you’re ever up that way. Thanks. Mandy

I love it when birds congregate like that. They remind me of that short called “For the Birds” by Pixar about the huge bird that shoots the other birds in the air and they all fall down naked.
Anyway… Haha… I just watched it like three times!
I subscribe to several city daily photos and love seeing the places I’ve been or am soon going to. What I like is that the photographers are taking what interests them. If you search for photos of Newcastle, or look in books, etc you end up with a bunch of pictures of “important” buildings and places. That’s all well and good, but it really doesn’t tell anyone what the town it really like. Like the best travel experiences, the best photos of a place are of the unexpected.
So, more weird bird formations. Photos of “important” buildings from their bad sides. Street scenes. What you see on your way to work. What you see while having coffee. You get the idea.
Mandy, requests can be arranged! Might take a little while but I’ll get there as soon as I can :)

Beth, I think you’ve been doing a great job so far. Just keep on posting the photos you like best, adding new angles and aspects to the postcard views we all know. Theme days or weeks are fine. I’m especially interested in the Toon itself, but I don’t mind if you go beyond that for a change from time to time. Just take the bridges as a landmark and as an idea - you can’t really separate Gateshead from Newcastle, can you? So even “North Tyneside” would be too strict as a definition. As long as it’s not Sunderland ;-)

As a born and bred on the best side of the River, Dunston (the backyard within spitting distance on the river - hence forth a true Geordie). I do not want to be lumped in a Newcastle/Gateshead.
Too many years of being called the ‘dirty back lane into Newcastle’ by Novocastrians - we have long memories and also we have had a Labour Council since pussy was a kitten.
Without Gateshead MBC driving forward the re-generation of the Quayside from our side of the river, the Millennium Bridge would not exist and neither would the Baltic and Sage. Newcastle had to be shamed and dragged kicking and screaming into re-generation. Previously the International Atheltic Stadium had raised our profile and the Angel of the North, which cost Gateshead people ‘zilch’ was a stroke of genius be the then existing Council.
So, Yes we can separate and keep on being separate for ever - or at least in my lifetime please.
Love the photos, I used to live in Fenham in the west end of newcastle. Now live Houghton le spring. I prefer different photos each day. I like statues, unusual pics, bridges, buildings. Anything really.

I think you’re doing a great job, as did Cassandra! I live in Newcastle but I love all those quirky places that I haven’t discovered yet to inspire me to go out and take a look. Love the idea of theme days / weeks
I also check out the Wellington daily photo as my brother and his family moved there last year and they hardly ever have any photos which could be described as traditional tourist images. Lots of offbeat pics. which gives me another perspective on the place which you don’t get in guide books, and I think people outside Newcastle like yours for the same reason.
Anywhere that could be easily reached from Newcastle would be great to include - even Northumberland and Durham.

I’ve been to the area about 4 times, and would like to return for further explorations. So I’m interested in slightly out-of-the-way places with a bit of character. Under the bridges, so to speak. Parks, long vistas, streetscapes, sites and events of neighbourhood interest: any of these and more would suit!
