April 22, 2008 - Mirrors

These mirrors are in the hall to the ladies loo in the restaurant that’s just next to the millennium bridge on the quayside. Any idea what it’s called? It’s a very trendy place, mostly business people after work, then upscale diners later…

April 21, 2008 - Black Gate

“The “Black Gate” was added to Newcastle Castle between 1247 and 1250, forming an additional barbican in front of the earlier north gate of the castle. It consisted of two towers with a passage running between them. On either side of the passage was a vaulted guardroom. There was a drawbridge at the front (facing west) and another at the rear. There was also a portcullis which could be raised and lowered to seal the entrance passage.

The original building would probably have had a flat roof, but in 1618 James I leased the gatehouse to a courtier, Alexander Stephenson. Stephenson substantially altered the gatehouse, rebuilding the upper floors. Stephenson then let the Black Gate out to various tenants, one of whom was a merchant, named Patrick Black. It was he who gave his name to the Black Gate.

Eventually houses were built along both sides of the passageway, and one part of the building became a public house. By the early part of the nineteenth century, the Black Gate had become a slum tenement, housing up to sixty people.

Blackgate was leased to the Society of Antiquaries in the 1880s, which extensively restored it between 1883 and 1885. It was the Society that added the top floor and pitched roof. The Society has held regular meetings there ever since. The drawbridges to the front and rear have been replaced by wooden footbridges.”

April 19, 2008 - Heaton Perk

B, of Watching Geordie Life ( http://watchinggeordielife.blogspot.com ) suggested a great cafe awhile ago, The Sky Cafe, and now I wanted to share my new favourite place with you guys: Heaton Perk! Every time i’ve walked by it, i’ve longed to go inside because it looked so cosy and inviting. I’ve been writing a lot more recently because several big projects are coming up and i’ve needed to get out of the house a bit and Heaton Perk was my first thought. What a gem i’ve found! They play really nice music, have convenient hours (9-5 or so, usually), and serve the best root beer floats outside the USA. (I also hear they do amazing coke floats for those of you who think that’s a yummy thing…) The owner is a super nice lady who was thrilled to make it for the first time for me, and I fear I might become the “root beer float girl” because they are very yummy and addicting! The prices are amazing, too. £1.50 for a latte, £2 for the float, and everything else is just as nice! They serve amazing looking cakes and sandwiches, too. I can’t say enough good things about this place!

From their myspace ( http://www.myspace.com/heatonperk )

“Heaton Perk is a coffee shop on Heaton Park Road (we’re next door to Ray’s barber shop). We sell beautiful coffees, teas and cold drinks. We also get a daily delivery of Dene’s Deli’s scrummy sandwiches and have a range of sweets and cakes. We haven’t been open for long, but have already built up a great reputation in the area. Everything we sell is priced fairly (we’re no Starbucks) and we welcome ANYBODY. Hope to see you all soon! xx”

Oh, and they are very soon going to be opening at 8a to serve the breakfast crowd with yummy breakfast-ish things!

I feel a bit foolish writing so much about this place, but I love it so much! So go check them out!
