What I do remember is that if we were coming out of the ‘Old Ass’ (as we called it) after a dance finishing at 2pm we saw Black Maria’s outside the Court.

  I don’t think there is much wrong with your memory, Mrs. K. The County Court was still in use up to 1993 and it had holding cells so it is quite probable that they dumped the drunks in them until they sobered up and faced the court in the morning. I think justice was a little bit faster in those days. It seems fitting that the building is still used for legal purposes and houses the offices of David Gray, Solicitors.
