February 10, 2009 - Rosie’s Bar, Stowell Street

Rosie’s Bar on Stowell Street.

Did you notice that ‘Stowell Street’ is written in Chinese underneath as well as in English?

I love the Rosie’s Bar photo. I want to go and have a beer and some good conversation.

Great picture! But what’s the significance of the Chinese on the street sign? We have that in some places around Toronto - mostly in the are known as Chinatown. Is that the case here, or is there some other reason for it? Looks like a great pub in any case.

Wow thanks Rosalie! If you hear about anything you want to see pics of please do let me know :)

I’ve not been in Rosie’s bar for ages Julie - I’ll go in there sometime soon and have a drink for you!

Steve H, if you look back a couple of days you’ll see a couple of pictures of Chinese New Year. If you look at the second you can actually see this street sign, but you can also see one side of the Chinatown gate. Yes, this is the Chinatown section of Newcastle. Rosie’s isn’t a Chinese bar (at least it didn’t seem to be last time I was there!) but it’s firmly located within Chinatown. See also the pics for Jan 15th and 13th on this page - they are taken from almost exactly the same place.
