January 22, 2009 - Northern Rock, Northumberland Street

Northern Rock on Northumberland Street. Great building again. I particularly love the clock and look up at it every time I walk down Northumberland Street from Haymarket. I’ll have to get a close-up at some point.

I’m not going to weigh in on the debate on the bonuses given to Northern Rock, other than to say too bloody right they didn’t give ‘em to execs or senior management!

PS - Cassandra’s having internet access issues but will be back soon (I hope!)

It is an unusual architectural style. When was it built, roughly? It looks too plain to be Victorian.

I’ve always thought that Newcastle is quite well endowed with public clocks, very handy when you’re not a watch wearer!…..shame you very rarely see them included as part of the design in new builds though, not even on public buildings. Nice picture!

Another lovely building, Beth. And another bank, of course! Well, they are the ones who have got the money! Or they used to!!! It does not look so rosy anymore! Ciao. Antonella

MartinC, I’ve no idea. Anyone? If noone knows I’ll pop in next time I’m in town and try to find out.

Mo I’d never thought of that, but you’re right! It’s a shame that there aren’t more clocks on new building.

Antonella, too true….!

this pic is also of the same branch. This branch (and the clock) featured in much of the footage of the bank going belly-up.
