October 16, 2008 - Bigg Market

Bigg Market, Newcastle, UK

I’ve been posting a lot of pics of Jesmond recently, largely because I’ve not been into the town centre. I rectified that on Sunday, so now we’re going to take a trip cutting through the Bigg Market, down High Bridge, onto Grey Street.

The Bigg Market is lovely during the day, but at night is one of the main destinations for people out drinking. It has a strange mix of architecture; that’s the main reason for this shot. On the left is TK Maxx; the old ornate building in the middle is a bar of some kind; then to the right is Simply Greek.

If you turn 45 degrees to the right from here, almost straight ahead of you is Pudding Chare, a little side street. (Mrs K - I pronounce it like something you sit on but my friends say char like a charlady - who’s right, in your esteemed opinion?) I can recommend Mario’s and The Raj Tandoori down that street.

Pizza/Pasta Hut from the day before yesterday is behind me as I took this shot; if you go straight back from there you get to Grainger Street, which is where I took that photo.

PS - I meant to let you know it was the Tyne Bridge’s 80th birthday on Friday. I posted some new photos of the bridge and linked to some articles on my blog.

It is exactly pronounced as ‘chair’.

Even in London they pronounce ‘Chare’ as ‘Chair’.

Your friend is muddling up the vernacular word for ‘Tea’ which is pronouned ‘char’ - as in ‘charred’.

Does this help or is s/he using ‘estuary english’. Grrrrrrrrr

My opinion is not really esteemed - its just I am an old biddy, who is on ‘overdraft time’ .

(over the three score years and ten).

Thanks Mrs K. I feel better now. It’s ALL my friends which is why I’d started to wonder! Nice to know I’m right :)
