February 12, 2009 - Haymarket from above

In contrast with my occasional ‘looking up in Newcastle’, here’s a ‘looking down in Newcastle’ shot.

This is Haymarket from above. You can see Haymarket Bus Station, the front of Marks and Spencers, and the new Haymarket Metro development, as well as St Thomas’s Church and the Civic Centre.

An interesting photo. It’s nice to see that the new store was built in a style similar to Victorian buildings. It’s sad to see that the local colours of Tyneside’s bus companies have been replaced with the ubiquitous Arriva colours.

MartinC, I noticed that but forgot to mention it. This bus station is mainly used by Arriva and Go North East buses - which explains the arriva colours. Go North East still has plenty of variety and colour, there just weren’t any there at that time. They have loads of different branded routes too - Pink Panther, Silver Arrows, Lime, Blaydon Racers - even The Highwayman to get to the Metro Centre. I’ve been meaning to post a pic of some buses for ages.

Stagecoach is another big bus company here. They use corporate colours too :(

Daniel, I took it from the fifth level of the spiral car park next to it. I’m quite pleased with it.

THanks Antonella!

Steve, straight ahead is the only way not to look :)

Talking about bus designs - are there still the ones saying “Money for nothing” all across the side of the bus? They used to highlight the job pages of one of the local newspapers. At the time, I thought it was quite funny.
