May 6, 2008 - Woodlouse Spider

The woodlice spider, Dysdera crocata, is one of the few british spiders who has fangs that can penetrate our skin. Luckily, it usually uses them to pierce the armour of its favourite prey, woodlice (hence the name) instead. Apparently humans can have an allergic reaction to the bite. It is often found in gardens in damp places were woodlice are found, like under stones and logs. They are nocturnal. We found this cheeky little creep in the kitchen a couple of days ago. No sign of more, thank goodness!

Oh yuck! It kind of reminds me of a Brown Recluse that we have here. Although the back has a marking that looks like a fiddle and it is nicknamed “fiddle back”. I think they also have fangs and will make you terribly sick. they like to hide in dark areas like drawers, shoes, etc…

Not as nerve-wracking as the Australian House-Spider. They’re biiiig, black shiny back and has hairy legs. First time I saw one of those, my first words were “@#$%^& heck! Look at the size of that thing!!”
