An American artist made his mark on the city centre with the unveiling of a 12-metre high glass sculpture in August 2004. Danny Lane’s “Ellipsis Eclipses” is made from hundreds of sections of specially crafted glass. The sculpture is situated outside Newcastle’s The Gate entertainment centre.

It’s probably the most attractive thing about the Gate - then again, that’s not saying much.
The Gate is an awful place.

Weird thing is, I was there the day they installed that piece, but I had no idea what was going on so just bitched about them closing off loads of space round the Gate and didn’t stop to watch what was going on.
Ourman, did you love the Mayfair too, or do you just hate the Gate? Just wondering.

Yes, nobody likes The Gate much. It’s all chrome and neon lights. Completely lacks any character and atmosphere. Reminds me of the same style as the awful ‘pacific bar’.
At least it keeps the chavs in one place off the streets.
