Happy memories of the National Beer Mat Flicking Contest in the now deceased Haymarket in Newcastle Village Centre. A wonderful pub that for some reason had opted out of the traditional floor covering known as carpet, and instead had sawdust.
NB is one of those interesting brews that have a way of sneaking up behind you and wacking you over the head with a large blunt object, just when you thought you were safe. May also be partly responsible for the redesigning of Chris H’s flat back in the 80’s. Sorry about that Chris.
I remember being told by some of the “old timers”, of which I am now one, that it should be drunk from a half pint glass, being topped up from the bottle as you go. The little finger, sometimes referred to as the “pinkie”, should be raised slightly, indicating that you have breeding, or a mild bone deformation.
‘ull - “Home of the pattie”, just don’t have the same ring to it, does it.

Newcastle Brown Ale, also known as Newky or Nukey Dog.
Newky is an abbreviation for its place of production - Newcastle of course. Nukey refers to the catastrophic impacts on bowels, bladder and head).
Whether you call it Newky or Nukey, don’t foget to call it Dog - a reference to the behaviour of overindulged consumers, which includes relieving themselves and procreating in public, and scraping around rubbish bins for left over kebabs).
It’s the right touch!

At last a comment from Ad and Apple worth commenting on! Ad did indeed get very drunk while staying at my flat many years ago,and woke up in the middle of the night imagining he was been attacked.The room he was in was smashed to bits in the morning….ahh the power of Newcastle Brown Ale!!
Apple is also right..to a degree. When I first moved to Newcastle(1983) I asked for a ‘Newkey Brown’ and was told in no uncertain terms to never call it that! It was either ‘Broon’(the way its said here) or ‘dog’. Cant stand the stuff now!!!!
I’m also pleased to see that its getting more and more popular in the States.

Must admit not to be a fan of the UK beer. For us beer without the foam on top is dead beer and worth sending back to the barman!
