October 11, 2008 - Central Station 2: Cassandra’s first post-departure post!
The last place I stood on Newcastle soil was central station and the station itself holds so many memories for me that I felt it should be the place that I make my first post-departure post of.
The station, that opened in 1850, is the principle stop on the East Coast Main Line. There are 12 platforms, serving direct access to places such as Morpeth, Edinburgh, Chester-le-Street, Durham, the MetroCentre, and London Kings Cross. Central Station also houses a main stop on the Metro line, serving the coast, Sunderland, Newcastle International Airport, and all the lovely stops in between.
Imagine my flatmate and I, standing on Platform 2, me in my Christmas pyjamas (Yes, bright pink with candy canes on!) with all of our worldly possessions (there’s a bit of it peeking in the corner there) bidding farewell to the place we called home for the past year.
The trip home was uneventful and lonely and I’ve been filling my time in Michigan renovating a 100 year old farm house that was left to my family from my Great Grandma Behnke and fondly remembering the 100 year old terrace flat I left on Brandon Grove in Sandyford.
I’ll be posting regularly on Wednesdays and I look forward to sharing my fondness for and memories of Newcastle with you guys!
