about Green twiddly bits ... posted by Beth
Ah green twiddly bits. If memory serves me right, this is a Victorian thing, in that it is copper that has weathered. I understand that buildings belonging to the less wealthy were painted green, hence the popularity of green painted widow frames and doors when I was a lad. Any one with an alternative explanation? That explanation sounds very good to me, MIke. Those green patinaed twiddly bits are like the final decoration on an amazing cake. I actually never really noticed them atop this beautiful building even though I’ve been in this bank countless times. I am always in much too much of a hurry when I go downtown. From now on I will try to take the time to gaze skyward and take in all those terrific details I’ve been missing out on. Nice picture and a beautiful blue sky.
Thanks again Beth for showing us all the good bits we’re missing by not looking up - can we start a “Green Twiddly Bits” facebook page?? :)
A wonderful picture of a wonderful building. It just made it in to the Victorian era as it was built originally in 1837, the year Victoria came to the throne. Can you believe it was built as a corn exchange? It was largely rebuilt in 1906 after a great fire and that was when the superb Central Arcade was added. Well done, Beth, you have managed to feature all three corners of the building in the last week. Two on this picture and the third on the photograph of Pret A Manger last week.
Everyone loves the green twiddlies :)
I think Mrs K said the green is weathered copper too so I’m happy to believe that!
Glad you all like the pic. I’ve been looking up on Northumberland St today. Pics will follow soon, ish :)
I didn’t remember the original green twiddly bits thread. Your title made smile nevertheless. Nice pic.
I’m so proud as I was responsible for the original Green Twiddly Bit comment! These are great shots Beth; superb buildings. Alf, that is really good info. To respond to you’re comment the other day: wasn’t there a small ground level bus station on Newgate Steet, opposite St Andrews? (or was it just a very large bus stop?!)
