This is the Sutherland Building (she says hopefully) on Northumbria University’s City Campus. It’s opposite City Hall, which is next to City Pool - I went swimming on Wednesday and decided it was time to take pictures of this building.

about Sutherland Building ... posted by Beth
That’s amazing. I’ve been to City Hall a couple of times, but I can’t remember this stunning building.
By the way, Beth, I hope you’re feeling better. Once the doctors start telling you to cut down your work rate, it’s better to obey. Job, family, plus a couple of blogs - that IS a lot. As mike wrote yesterday, it’s the two of you first. Then pictures. (If you’re still worried about this place, we could have another readers’ photo fortnight or something!)
Nice picture, Beth, and I love the building even if it did used to house the Dental Hospital. I seem to remember some coats of arms above one of the entrances, did you remember to look up? I haven’t been past for long time and it looks as though it has been given a good scrub since then. I read somewhere that it is supposed to be haunted but I couldn’t find any more information.
Daniel - it depends which way you approach the City Hall and City Pool from, I think. If you walk from town you won’t get far enough to see it, but if you go from the Civic Centre or Northumbria you’ll walk past it. Worth a look. I have to say, I never noticed the miner on the top of Burt Hall (right opposite City Hall and City Pool, duh) until well after Cassandra first posted a pic. I think my eyes switch off around this area for some reason…! Worth walking past anyway to see the buildings on this corner.
Thanks for looking after me :) I’ve got my camera back now, and I’ve been taking pics galore the last couple of days. The main reason the site has been stressful recently has been the lack of decent pics - my mobile is OK in bright weather and the dark but doesn’t like grey skies. Now I’ve stocked up I feel MUCH better.
Alf - I had no idea it used to be the Dental Hospital! I didn’t see the coat of arms but I’ll have to have another look next time I go for a swim. If you do find anything about it being haunted please let me know :)
It is an amazing building and I can confirm it was once the dental hospital. It is supposed to be haunted - I heard it was caretaker who used to have a flat in the building but can’t confirm that. Being a university it’s a public building and they don’t mind people going in and you might care to take a look sometime. You should go in the drill hall as well - that was originally used for training cavalry horsese and there are still brackets on the roof that used to have ropes going down to the horses. Unfortunately Burt Hall is less accesible but the new City Campus East is open and there’s a pretty good (and excellent value) restaraunt and Starbucks on the ground floow that anyone can use.
