It seems like a long, long time ago that they started work to demolish the buildings that were here before, and even longer ago (errm, obviously) that I first heard the rumours that Debenhams were coming to Newcastle. I’m still not overly excited about the destruction of the Green Market, and I couldn’t really care less about the specific shops, but hopefully the shop will be a success. Because I can’t imagine how horrible it would be for all concerned if such a huge regeneration project ended in empty buildings. If only someone would regenerate Pilgrim Street….

Google maps (in satellite mode) has pictures of the deconstruction phase at the moment. It’s sad to see green market go, really. Hopefully, Grainger market is here to stay?
By the way, I just heard the news about St. James’ Park being rebranded to an absolute monstrosity of a name. Is there any chance of you keeping an eye out for the inutterable “sports direct dot com at st james’ park stadium” letters being put up there for the first time?
Beth, pleased you’re feeling OK by the way. Good to have you back.
It is sad that Greenmarket going; actually I think it is sad about some of the specific shops too. You’re right about Pilgrim Street - it could do with a sensitive makeover!
DANIEL - you are spot on about the ludicrous renaming of St James’. Beth, you should snap that one if you can! Ridiculous.
Cassandra - hope you read this: you did a great job in B’s absence and I’m sorry I couldn’t comment on your pics!
I believe the Grainger Market is listed Daniel so I bloomin’ HOPE it’s here to stay! I think there would be outrage if it went.
I was planning to ignore that I ever heard such a travesty of a name!!!! Do you REALLY need a pic? I’ll see what I can do ;)
Dave - thanks :) My mother in law used to have a stall in the Green Market, and Dances With Unicorns is a big miss (I don’t care if it’s relocated, it’ll never be the same….)
I’ll see if I can make myself take such a terrible pic!!!!!!
I’ll make sure Cassandra pops in to see your message :)
Thank you, Dave! Comments or no comments, it’s nice to know that you guys enjoyed the fun week!
B, I always read the comments, even if I don’t post one myself everyday :) It’s nice to know what’s going on at “home”
B, your wish is the council’s command! - The council has already big plans for Pilgrim Street… and the surrounding area…

Exciting times!
Mike
P.S. - This is addition to Science City, The Stephenson Quarter, and I hear Newgate Shopping Centre is going to be demolished and redeveloped into somethng else…
Glad to hear it, I just didn’t want you to miss it :)
Mike! I heard something YEARS back about Pilgrim Street being redeveloped (in the Journal I think) but then never heard a sausage so decided it must have fallen through. Great that they’re doing it - but why did that not happen first??? It’s a much grottier area of town than the Debenhams development was before and that’s a more key location to my mind - straight off the Tyne Bridge. Oh well - at least they’re doing it now!
Newgate Shopping Centre?! Wow, I never saw that coming! I hope they do something really good….
I’ve been working in this store for nearly a month now and we are so excited for it opening next week! People will be blown away by this, totally modern shiny and clean! There is a lot less recession stalls in there as other debenhams have but it still has all the main designers plus new ones like Henry Holland and Ben d’Lisi is designing for the new principles anyone who has the chance to come in please do and have a good look around. You wont be dissapointed I promise!
