This is a really, really weathered grave at Jesmond Old Cemetery. Poor-quality sandstone doesn’t last very well.

I love visiting old cemetaries! Whenever i’m in Newcastle i try to visit Jesmond old cemetary, it’s had quite a tidying up job done on it recently, a lot of the old Graves are more accessible now, a real insight into the past…
What a splendid stone
Excellent photograph, Beth, it is a wonderful place. So many famous names are buried there. Dobson, Fenwick, Bainbridge, Hancock, Laing, Armstrong to mention but a few. It is good to see that the Friends of Old Jesmond Cemetery are working to improve things. They even have their own website:

which is well worth a look at.
I went on the tour of the cemetery and catacombs as part of the Tyne and Wear Heritage Open Days. Highly recommended if you get the chance. The guide was great. The problem is that it’s so big - they clear one grave but it’s a year til they get back to clear it again, and by that time it’s inaccessible again. They need proper finance and more people - but so many places need investment and people…
I love to visit these type of historic places and you captured a nice photograph.
Interesting Alf… I didn’t know all those worthies were buried there; I’ll have to take a look! Good shot too Beth.
Thanks Gadgets!
Dave - if you’re going to have a wander do check out the website Alf linked. And do the Heritage Open Day next year, it was FAB! Also, the guy who did our tour has written a book about the place which he was selling for a fiver - I bought it and plan to go back sometime and have another look round :)
brilliant - thanks Beth
