This sign is on Jesmond Road, leading up to the Central Motorway - the A167(M). It’s a terrifying bit of road if you’re not expecting it - hell, it’s a terrifying bit of road if you know it well. But the interesting thing about this sign - to me, at least - is that the two roundabouts marked so clearly on the sign are no longer there - and haven’t been there for over six years, at my best guess.
I wonder if they ever plan to replace the sign?

Great photo! We’re just getting our second roundabout in Eagan. Maybe the city likes to play a joke on drivers and increase their driving stress?? That’s my guess!
I know it well and carefully avoided it for years, until I discovered they had removed the roundabouts. MikeM
Good one Hawkeye ;)
Thanks for this; I was also amused by the ‘Pathetic Motorways’ site that you link too. The photos on there do show the Central Motorway as being really random… you really do have to concentrate when using it!
Cheers, Dave
Leif- wouldn’t surprise me at all :) Hope the roundabout works well!
MikeM - you’d never know from the signs would you?
Cheers Dave :) Yes I will have to investigate that site further one day!
The craziest bit is where you join it in order to head southbound using that little slip road just after the Hancock (sorry, Gt North Museum!). You end up effectively joining the motorway on its fast lane! But it’s a nifty way of heading for the south of Tyne from the Haymarket / Barras Bridge area.
God yes, I’ve never done that and never plan to! :)
You know what - I’m going to have to comment again on this. Since you posted this Beth (including the link to the ‘Pathetic Motorways’ website) I’ve looked at this little motorway with fresh eyes. After having used it for years, I’ve just realised now that it is a masterpiece really - with it’s many levels, curvy concrete etc. I say a masterpiece, as it is so useful and amazing that it is shoehorned into the city where it is!
Call me mad, I can take it ;)
Insane/masterpiece - sometimes the line is very, very fine :)
I think the skills of those who use it every day can’t be underestimated!!!
lol yes I’ve well n’ truly crossed the line!
