Aha! But the photo was taken on Newcastle side! And that stuff in the distance is on Newcastle side! Way to get your Gateshead in and still be all about Newcastle!
Great when you stand on the middle of it, place your hands on the railings, and look up-river. With the wind blowing down the Tyne the bridge hums and shivers and you’re exactly pitched between Newcastle and Gateshead. A very powerful experience!
I love it; I have a photo I took of it as it was being floated up the river when they erected it! It all came more or less in one piece; I think they just had to put the deck on it.
I watched it being built at the Amec, Wallsend yard where I worked. A fantastic achievement as it had only a margin of error of 3mm. There are several videos out there too of it being transported, a fantastic sight.
Lovely cityscape. It looks so peaceful. And I think the bridge looks great—modern and simple.

Thanks Hilda!

Thanks so much for that link Alf. Amazing pics. I wish I’d been here at the time!
Thanks Beth, the pic is an old-fashioned one - i.e. taken on 35mm and developed at Boots! Will dig it out and scan and send sometime.
