February 23, 2008 - Give & Take – Peter Randall-Page 2005

honeycomb, newcastle, uk

Location – Trinity Gardens, Quayside
Materials – Naturally eroded glacial boulder
Commissioned by – Silverlink Properties & Newcastle City Council
‘Give and Take’ is carved from a 36-tonne naturally eroded glacial boulder over 3m in height. The boulder, rounded like a giant pebble by glaciation, was unearthed near Fort William in Scotland. The artist acquired it in 1998 and transported the monumental stone to his studio in Devon. Accepting the overall shape of the rock as a given, Peter Randall-Page mapped its entire surface with an unbroken matrix of 630 hexagons and 12 pentagons. This pattern can be seen in the natural world in cellular, molecular and atomic structures.

Wow, that’s a great shot Cassandra, I’ve only ever seen it in the daytime, but at night it looks quite magical.

Thanks

Mike.

Hellooo… thanks for looking out for me!

I’ve been popping in and out…

I’ve also been busy taking some pictures of the Northumbria University new campus at night, the best view is from the back at night. It’s lit up like a big blue Christmas tree… The new bridge is stunning at night too.

Take care

Mike

One of my flatmates has his classes there! It’s really pretty to go at like 4a when there’s a frost and the path sparkles and everything is sort of misty… it’s really awesome. Course, it may have been the after effects of a night out that made it seem like that!
