Thanks for all of your efforts with the site. Your pictures are truly fantastic. Any chance of a picture of the Bigg Market or the area where the Mayfair nightclub used to be as I moved away from Newcastle 8 years ago and have heard about the changes but would love to see them. Cheers !!

Cody, where is the Bigg Market? I’d be glad to go get a shot of it for you.

Bigg Market is here:-
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=NE1+5JG&ie=UTF8&ll=54.970662,-1.613939&spn=0.005167,0.010729&z=17&om=0

Not much has changed there, although many pubs and clubs have shut down due to The Gate complex opening up.

The Mayfair club got knocked down in 2002 to make way for The Gate entertainment complex.

Lovely! Newcastle is one place that has some eye-catching beauty spots. The old mixed with the new provides a lot of history and visual feasts.

BTW, have you, amongst your collection, a picture of the inside of Newcastle Central Station? *starts grovelling* Please?

How can you live in Newcastle and not know the Bigg Market??!?!??!?!?! If you walk from the Gate down Newgate Street to the traffic lights with Boots on your right and Greggs on your left (ie where you cross Grainger Street), straight in front of you is the Bigg Market. (Holland and Barratt is on your right a little further so you know if you’re in the right place.) Sometimes there’s a gypsy caravan parked on the corner doing palm readings and the like. And if you turn right halfway down (before the street splits) you go down Pudding Chare- I highly recommend the Raj Tandoori (Indian, obviously) and Mario’s (Italian) - Puccini’s also used to be good but haven’t been there for ages. Full of drunken people at the weekend, more student friendly in the week I think. In all seriousness, you are not missing out if you never go at night, but the restaurants are good in the evening :)

Cody, the pic on the left here http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.thegoodgamblingguide.co.uk/images/thisweek/aspers/thegate.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.thegoodgamblingguide.co.uk/thisweek/2005/aspers.htm&h=240&w=250&sz=17&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=YDYVB94MijMgDM:&tbnh=107&tbnw=111&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthe%2Bgate%2Bnewcastle%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26sa%3DN is the Gate. The Mayfair is just a distant memory. I for one still miss it :(

Heather I think there are some pics of the inside of Central in the archives but I am too lazy to hunt them out for you. Sorry….!!! :)

Cassandra, the Bigg Market area is on the corner to where Pizza Hut is on Grainger Street.

The Mayfair club was knocked down and is where The Gate entertainment complex is.

Mike, is that the same as the Grainger Market? I can take gander down there in a couple of days and see what I can scope out.

Hi Cass, its further on a bit down Grainger Street. I think you have passed there before,
currently it has a ‘gypsie’s fortune telling wagon’ on the corner of it.

It’s not really a market like Grainger Market, its like a cobbled lane…

This is what part of it looks like…
