April 1, 2007 - Theme day. Post/Mail box

nov 12 2006.jpg

April 1st (no fools here thankyou!) brings another theme day to the DP posters. This post box is unusual to Newcastle (in fact-to England) as it is Chinese looking. The reason is of course because this box is in China town.

Go here to see the full list of post boxes from around the world! (Don’t forget some will be posted later due to time differences)

Kate, as the day progresses I predict you will get tired of blue mailboxes in the US.

Chris good choice on a difficult theme.

I really like it. It’s very Pagoda-like.

what a beautiful mailbox. In Holland we don’t have that kind of mailbox. And yes, Kate another one that’s red.

Actually, its an 1866 box in better repair than the one I’ve posted. Possibly restored and put in China Town for the reason you suggest?

Aristrocratic! Come meet my unusual Maui one.

Chris, this box is the “full montey” to Ham’s shortened version in another location. It doesn’t look Chinese except for the red color, to me. Beautiful shot!

Exactly like in a picture book, in my opinion!

That’s a classic Victorian octagonal box - one of the oldest in the UK. There’s one in Bournemouth, and one in Sydney’s Chinatown too. Victorians were very influenced by Orientalism - maybe that’s why they chose to make them look a bit pagoda like?

I should say “pillar box”, not mail box, of course!

Sally said,

oops! Not octagonal. It’s a Penfold HEXAGONAL.
