February 1, 2007 - Theme Day-Things that annoy me in my town.

DSCF2098 (Small)redo.jpg

As usual on the first of every month the DP world has a theme day. There are two things in this picture that I don’t like. One is the ugly building on the right that crosses the street and the second is the beautiful(inside) disused cinema on the left . The first one is annoying because it’s so ugly and the other one because it’s been wasted.

Go here to what other DP bloggers dislike in their town/city. (don’t forget to take into account the time differences!)

Yeah such a waste Chris, I remember going to some great concerts at the Odeon in the 1970’s.

I’ve moved to Wordpress as you know, time to get those links updated again!

Chris, this is a great example of a common problem in many cities. One can understand why the homeless also get disappointed in their city. Great choice.

Sharp lines for a sharp comment. Ugly architecture is an eyesore that we have to cope with every day.

Great contrast, Chris. Who on earth gave planning permission to that monstrosity over the pavement?

We had an introductory talk at that odeon as part of freshers week when I started at University in Newcastle. It was a beautiful building. What a shame! :-(

Absolutely. I bet that cinema would really be appreciated if only back in use again. Any plans for alternative use being challenged?

Although i’m not showing on the list (i was too late - eek!), i am participating in Theme Day.

Huge contrast in styles. Surely they can find somthing to use the theater for…maybe they’ll use it when that thing falls of the side of the building.

Two annoyances for the price of one.

What can I say Chris, could not agree more with you. I’m surprised someone allowed that actually!

Great photo of this pairing of neglect and design fiasco. A sad scene indeed.

That particular form of ugly brutalism is the worst of what British cities (I say that cos that particular type just seems so British - other cities have different forms of ugly architecture! ) . So much of course happened in rebulding after WW2, into the 1960s, and hopefully as they reach the end of their lives something with more aesthetic appeal may replace them? Can we hope? As for beautiful old cinemas fallen into disrepair - that is also a common lament. In sydney dvelopers rip them down and put up outr glass and concrete uglinesses - emples to consumerism most of them.
