This beautiful pillar is the other side of Central Arcade from THIS EARLIER PICTURE.As you can see there is one at each entrance. The arcade was built in 1840,but after a terrible fire ,was rebuilt in 1906(hence the date at the top of the column). Chris, thanks for the very kind comments you left on my page. I really appreciate it. Your photos are brilliant. You’ve done the whole of Newcastle prous (unlike their football team!). If you want to know how to do the copyright thing, it’s simple. But first I need to know if you use or have access to Photoshop.
Let me know, thanks again for your comments.

This is some great architecture! What is the large sign in the window in the background that says “I *heart* YN” and looks like the “I *heart* NY logo”? What’s the YN?

I know I’m heading back to a year ago when you first took this pic… the I *heart* YN window is for a store called Oddbins, a wine and beer cheer! This store moved across to the other side of Grainger street and this is now a clothes shop.
Apparently the Central Arcade used to be a grand hotel, and had tea rooms etc. I worked in a shop a couple of doors down and the basement still has old flowered wallpaper which has been varnished over. On the first floor of this building there are offices, and nearer the top there are appartments.
Oh and it’s supposed to be haunted! I did get a creepy feeling, especially on the rare occasions where I was locking up on my own, but I never *saw* anything!
